Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful info about Plush Bodywork and therapeutic massage & bodywork in Chicago.

What is a session like?

Serene, invigorating, calming, effective...
Every session caters to your unique needs and preferences. Although some people like very strong, firm strokes, others may prefer a gentler touch. Guests who desire relief from deep, chronic tension often prefer stronger work. However, if you're simply stressed out from a hectic day, you may enjoy a more slow, fluid style than, say, a triathlete in training.

A typical session starts with a gentle warm up to ease you into a more relaxed state and begin loosening your muscles. Gradually we may introduce deeper pressure to relieve tension and trigger points/knots, restoring a feeling of balanced alignment. This progression is often described by guests as being cathartic as well as effective. Finally, long, soothing strokes tie it all together, leaving you calm, refreshed, and often euphoric.

What makes your service different, even better than many spas?

The foundation of my practice is deep appreciation for my guests. More than 90% of them are repeat clients, the majority of whom visit very regularly. The heart of my private practice revolves around two essential values:

Quality over quantity-
Having a selective private practice allows me to serve my guests in a way that I think is more rewarding for both of us. A low-volume, client-centered approach translates to a much higher level of service. Rest assured- whether you're the first or last visitor of the day, you can count on a focused, energetic therapist who will make you feel truly renewed.

Personalization-
At Plush Bodywork, you are a welcomed guest rather than just another name in the appointment book. Whereas many spas require their therapists to use a rigid company "menus," often with specific massage "routines," I freely blend techniques and customize each session. I combine warm hospitality and personalization to make each of my guests feel they have discovered their very own, private retreat.

Will my session be "full body?"

I strive to provide you with an exceptionally well-integrated session, working in a way which effectively addresses specific areas of tightness, but which also restores whole-body balance.

A good, experienced therapist will always work in a way which gradually eases into your muscles, allowing for work which is surprisingly soothing, comfortable, yet profound in its reach. Sometimes you'll need a little extra time on areas like your low back and shoulders, or tight legs. The amount of time we need to get great results depends on how much time your muscles need to release their "knots" comfortably. It's common to spend 20-40 minutes on one region of the body in order to achieve optimal results. With that in mind, be sure to book enough time. I have found that 90 minutes is really the bare minimum amount of time necessary to do good quality work. Most of my "regulars" book 2 hour sessions.

Please note: This is a strictly professional, therapeutic wellness service. We adhere diligently to all ethical standards for healthy, non-sexual therapeutic massage & bodywork.

Will I be draped? Must I undress fully?

Yes, in accordance with Illinois and Chicago massage laws, you will always be properly draped.

While receiving bodywork or massage, you'll relax on a cozy professional massage table, beneath a soft, cotton sheet. You may undress as much or as little as you like. Most people undress fully since all areas not receiving work will be covered at all times.

If you are self-conscious, I will gladly use massage techniques which allow you to remain fully clothed, while still receiving the full benefits of therapeutic massage and bodywork. Should that be the case, loose clothes, like sweats, are recommended.

What shall I do to get the most from my session?

Arrive on time...
so you can spend your full massage & bodywork session time on the table. This will also give us enough time to discuss any special needs you may have, and plan a massage & bodywork session for maximum results.

Communicate your wellness goals to me.
All first-time visitors fill out a wellness questionaire so that I can assess your needs. We may also take a few minutes to discuss your goals. Giving me accurate information allows me to customize your massage & bodywork session, resulting in maximum benefits to you.

Give feedback throughout your massage & bodywork session.
If you would like more or less pressure, if you'd like the room to be a touch warmer or cooler...just let me know. Your comfort is important to me.

Schedule adequate time to allow me to give you a well-integrated massage & bodywork session.
Deep work, complemented by very relaxed pacing is at the core of my signature massage & bodywork style. If you are very tight, and/or very muscular this is essential. Rather than just "smoothing you over" as some massages may do, I incorporate advanced techniques, which will melt deeply into the core of your muscle tension, dissolving tight knots, while proceeding at a relaxed, soothing pace... As a reward, your muscles warm up and release tightness comfortably.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Massage and Bodywork will flush lots of toxins from your tissues. To make sure that these toxins are completely "washed" from the body, drink plenty of extra water for the rest of the day. You'll find that this leaves you feeling clean, and energized!

It's a great idea to plan a few minutes of relaxation or lighter activity after massage & bodywork sessions.
Bodywork triggers a profound relaxation response, and often, will flood your system with endorphins. The health benefits of allowing youself to enjoy this "body buzz" are enormous. If you can take a 15 minute power nap at your desk, or take the rest of the day off afterward...wonderful!

May I take a quick shower before or after my massage?

Certainly! You are welcome to take a quick rinse before or after your session. I have a courtesy shower available for your convenience.

Spa quality organic toiletries are supplied: Dr. Hauschka shampoo, Origins shaving cream, and L'Occitane shower soap are provided.

If, due to physical disability, you require an extended time in the shower facilities, please advise me in advance. I will gladly schedule other appointments a few minutes later, to accomodate your special needs. Thank you.

How far in advance should I book my massage/bodywork session?

I understand that many of my executive clients' schedules are tight. Simply book your session as far in advance as is conveniently possible for you. I do my very best to accomodate all reasonable requests. Advanced booking is highly recommended to ensure your "first choice" appointment time. Appointments around noon and between 4pm and 6pm are extremely popular, so advanced booking for these peak times is strongly encouraged.

Reservations and inquiries are accepted Monday through Friday 10am-6pm.
Please note that Saturday appointments are available ONLY for established VIP clients, and should be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.

What if I want to extend my session?

It is my pleasure to extend your session if my schedule permits! However, I recommend reserving the longer session time to begin with, since I am often booked for another session after yours. Believe me, no one ever regrets treating themself to more relaxation!

Is it alright to bring my children/pets with me?

Please, do not bring any unattended children or furry pets into the studio with you. I love animals, but this is a special opportunity for you to relax in a peaceful environment. I must also be sensitive to the needs of guests who have allergies. I do not have resources to monitor your children, nor is my studio "child-proofed." You may feel welcome to chain your dogs (or children *wink*) to the iron gate at the building's entrance.

How easy is it to get to you from the Board of Trade and the Loop?

Extremely easy! My massage and bodywork studio is located in the heart of Chicago, nestled alongside many of the city's best restaurants, boutiques, and the shade of a beautiful, green park. From major landmarks in Chicago, it takes just a few minutes to get to my front entrance.

From the Chicago Board Of Trade 5-7 minutes
From The East Bank Club 2-5 minutes
From the Kennedy Expressway 2-5 minutes

Is parking available? What about cabs or public transportation? Can I park my bike nearby?

Yes, yes and yes! Free parking, often right at the front door, is extremely plentiful. Cabs are easy to catch. The nearest bus stop is less than one block away. There is a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) blue line stop 2 blocks from my front door. Bicyclists may lock their bikes to the iron gate at the entrance. Easy!

What forms of payment do you accept?

CASH ONLY. Thank you. Payment should be made at the beginning of your session. Please be sure to visit a cash station before your session, as checks or other forms of payment are unacceptable as final payment (...not even if you're Mother Theresa.)

Please note: Though final payment is accepted only IN CASH, you're appointments will be held with your credit card number. Again, acceptable final payment is CASH ONLY. Absolutely no checks (personal or corporate) or credit cards for final payment. Thanks!

What is a customary tip?

According to trusted etiquette expert, Emily Post, tipping for satisfactory service is customary, with roughly 18-20% considered to be the polite norm for most services in metropolitan areas. My clients seem accustomed to that standard. Of course, the amount you tip is entirely up to your good taste, and is deeply appreciated.

How often should I visit?

The benefits of massage & bodywork are often cumulative. I see most of my clients either once a week or once every two weeks. These clients have said that the regular visits have profoundly enhanced their emotional well being, as well as their physical health. That said, just visit as often as is convenient for you.

Without exception, people who have exerienced the positive effects of massage and bodywork indicate that a once-a-month minimum is de rigueur for stress management, detoxing and physical conditioning. What a pleasant prescription!

What if I am running late?

For the sake of guests who are scheduled after you, please plan ahead and arrive on time. If you're running more than 10 minutes late, please call, so that I can accomodate you as best as possible. It is very important that you call, so that I do not conclude that you are a no show (see booking policies). Those who are more than 15-20 mins late without calling will be considered "no shows. " so please call if you will be late.

Common sense policy: If you are late, you are still responsible for paying for your full time slot, in the amount you requested upon booking. Keep in mind, the time you reserved was/is held just for you- your therapist cannot take other business while waiting for your arrival, and probably turned down other requests in order to honor your reservation. I very much prefer to spend the your appointment time helping you to relax. Please do your best to arrive on time so that you can savor every minute.

What is your cancellation/rescheduling policy?

If you must miss or reschedule an appointment, please call and notify me at least 24 hours in advance so that I may offer your time to someone else. If you have 2 hours or more booked, or if you have 2 or more people in your party, I require at least 48 hours notice, to allow adequate time to fill your appointment slot(s).

Because missed appointments and last minute rescheduling/cancellations are very costly, all appointments cancelled/rescheduled with less than the prescribed notice will be charged the full amount via your credit card.

No shows are not permitted to book again until the full rate for their missed session has been paid in full. Appointment requests from repeat offenders may be declined. Exceptions may be made with *proof* of a medical emergency. Thanks.

I have seen and heard you mention VIP guests. What does that mean?

I value all of my guests. My VIP's are special people whose exceptional kindness, positivity, and loyalty stand out.

Will you barter/trade/donate, etc?

Nope. I very privately contribute time and money to several charitable organizations, and believe that very adequately satisfies my karmic obligations. I no longer do trades with other therapists; I prefer to pay for bodywork so that I can relax and enjoy it without "shop talk."

What will you be wearing during our session? Can you describe your measurements for me? Do you offer any "extras"? Do you offer tantra? Can I massage you?

No. If you are asking these questions, you are not seeking a therapeutic bodywork session. This is a strictly therapeutic, wellness facility, not a massage parlor. I strive to create an environment which is reassuringly professional, and mutually respectful. My appearance, conduct and practices reflect these values. Without exception, I provide only professional, non-erotic, therapeutic bodywork.
